Filming Ampol’s Kurnell induction video

Ampol needed to update the emergency induction for contractors and operational staff at its Kurnell terminal. We worked with its learning and operations teams and filmed staff demonstrating the procedures on site.

The existing induction video

Ampol’s Kurnell terminal had an existing emergency induction video, but it was showing its age. It still carried Caltex branding and relied heavily on text, maps and static images. The team wanted more footage of the actual site.

The audience was contractors and operational staff. This was a site-specific part of a wider induction, with a particular focus on what people needed to know in an emergency. It also needed to fit with Ampol’s existing training material and assessment.

The new footage needed to show staff carrying out the actions in the script at the Kurnell terminal.

The shooting script and shot list

Ampol supplied the existing narration and an updated script. We put the material into a shooting-script format, with space to identify the footage and location for each part of the narration.

The site team filled in the locations and helped plan what we could film. The shot list included people using radios, stopping work, checking on colleagues and moving to a muster point. A muster warden and the site’s access-card system also needed to be shown.

The crew could see what needed to be filmed and who Ampol needed to have available.

Filming at the terminal

We filmed at Kurnell on 23 October 2024. The shoot was planned as a full day, with Ampol staff appearing in the scenes.

The terminal was operating, so filming had to fit around the normal working day. Ampol’s team helped stage the actions and coordinate the people and locations. They could also check the actions on camera against the site’s procedures.

Voiceover and script changes

We discussed whether to use an on-camera presenter or a voiceover. Voiceover made later script changes easier because we wouldn’t need to bring a presenter back to record them.

Ampol reviewed the voice options and chose Saul from our production team. We recorded his narration using the revised script.

Ampol revised the narration during the review to improve readability and address feedback from the people responsible for the induction.

The Kurnell alarm recording

Ampol supplied a recording of the Kurnell site siren and emphasised that the tones had to be correct. We used the site recording so viewers heard the alarm they’d need to recognise at Kurnell.

People responsible for the induction need to check the procedures, wording and alarm sounds before approval.

Ampol’s review and final delivery

Ampol collected feedback from its teams during the review. We used the revised voiceover script and Ampol’s comments on the footage for the next edit.

By 4 December, multiple internal teams had reviewed the video and Ampol told us it had been well received. We completed the last edit and delivered the video on 5 December 2024.

If you need to update a site induction, send us the existing video or training material and an outline of what has changed. Read more about our training video production in Sydney, or talk to us about the project.
